Novel Magic: Sorchia Reviews The Bravados by Parris Afton Bonds

A few years ago, I had the good fortune to meet Parris Afton Bonds at a writers conference. Though our encounter was brief, she was nothing but kind. In fact, she’s kind to everyone. She’s truly a warm and wonderful lady.

Her stories may not be the normal paranormally fare of this page, but I wanted to share a review I wrote of her latest book. Get a copy for 99 cents and look for the next in the series in 2021.

The Bravados by Parris Afton Bonds

Historical Fiction should be taught as a Magical Art. Even then, only the grand masters would be able to cast an adequate spell. Parris Afton Bonds is such a grand master. Her attention to factual details as she weaves a compelling tale is nothing short of sorcery.


The Bravados begins in 1890 and follows the powerful Texas family through the turn of the next century. War and tragedy mark the decade as family members become embroiled in the Spanish-American War and endure the Galveston hurricane. Love blossoms for some, dies for others. Betrayal, tragedy, romance, and adventure play out in a sweeping saga set against the harsh realities of life in 19th century Texas. Deaths alter the trajectory of the family’s influence and births promise hope and renewal.


Though The Bravados is book three in The Texicans series, it stands very well on its own. Parris does, however, provide tantalizing glimpses of the past which will make you want to grab those first two books to see just how the characters reached the state of affairs they find themselves in. By the end, you’ll also be consumed with curiosity about the future of the far-flung and complex Paladin clan.

Four Book Reviews! If I’m going to read, I figured I might as well write reviews. I’m happy to report that every book I’ve picked has been a solid 4 or better. This has not always been the case.
